Immigration New Zealand has confirmed significant changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, effective 24 August 2026. These changes open up residence to a wider group of skilled workers already contributing to the New Zealand economy.
One Wage Threshold, Not Two
Most SMC applicants now only need to meet a single SMC wage threshold, generally the one in effect when they started accruing their skilled work experience. Previously, applicants had to meet one rate for their work experience and a higher rate again when they applied for residence, which caught many people out when thresholds rose.
New Skilled Work Experience Pathway
This pathway is designed for migrants working in a skilled role at ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 who have at least five years of directly relevant work experience, including two years in New Zealand earning at least 1.1 times the SMC median wage.
New Trades and Technician Pathway
Migrants working in specified trades and technician occupations at skill levels 1 to 3 can now qualify if they hold a relevant Level 4 or above qualification and have at least four years of post-qualification experience.
Looking Ahead to 2027
From 2027, migrants who need up to 12 additional months of skilled work experience will be able to extend their Accredited Employer Work Visa to complete the experience required for residence.
