New Zealand Introduces English Language Requirement for Skill Level 3 AEWV Roles

New Zealand Introduces English Language Requirement for Skill Level 3 AEWV Roles

Immigration New Zealand has extended English language requirements under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) to a wider range of occupations.

Who Is Affected

From 1 June 2026, AEWV applicants in ANZSCO or National Occupation List skill level 3 roles must meet minimum English language requirements. Previously, mandatory English testing under the AEWV applied only to skill level 4 and 5 occupations.

How to Meet the Requirement

Applicants can satisfy the requirement with an approved English test result, or in some cases through evidence of prior study or citizenship of an English-speaking country. Test results are usually valid for two years.

Planning Your Application

If you are being offered a skill level 3 role in New Zealand, book your English test early so results are available when your employer is ready to lodge the job check and visa application.
